Comics and cartoons

CBR and many other sites have been reporting the sad news of artist Michael Turner losing his long battle with cancer at the tragically young age of only 37.As Lambiek notes Michael was ‘discovered’ by Marc Silvestri at a comics convention and given work at Top Cow, beginning with background illustrations before becoming involved in the creation of Witchblade. In addition to founding his own comics company, Aspen, which published his own Fathom and Soulfire comics, Michael provided artwork for major DC and Marvel titles, with his cover artwork being especially prized by fans. He was diagnosed in 2000 with cancer and, as the CBR article notes, impressed everyone who knew him with how he faced the ordeal of the disease and the painful treatments he had to endure to combat it (and as anyone who has watched a loved one deal with cancer knows the treatment sometimes feels as bad as the damned disease). Michael passed away on Friday evening at Santa Monica hospital; Aspen Comics have asked anyone wanting to make a charitable donation in Michael’s name to consider giving to his requested charities the Make-a-Wish Foundation and The American Cancer Society.
