The BBC has revealed artwork designed by the Gorillaz team of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett which will be part of the opening sequence of the Beeb’s Olympics coverage. The art is based on the venerable Chinese tale Journey to the West and depicts Monkey, Pigsy and Sandy standing by the Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing. The pair had already collaborated with Chinese actor/director Chen Shi-zheng on a stage adaptation of Wu Cheng’en’s original 16th century tale (still being read around the world to this day – Penguin Classics still does an accessible English language edition with their traditional useful notes); of course those of us of a certain age are probably more familiar with the fantastically bonkers Asian TV series Monkey. Anyone want to join me in singing a chorus of the TV theme tune?
