Good news – a new Next Door Neighbor strip has been posted on Smithmag: Glenna Evans by Barbara Rushkoff and Nathan Schreiber. A young couple with a new baby move into an apartment next door to an elderly former showgirl – cue arguments, guilt trips and a strange relationship which captures that combination of irritation and annoyance with someone (here a neighbour but it stands just as well with friends and family) mixed with acceptance and affection. Glenna seems half mad, has odd habits and drives them nuts, but at the same time there’s a connection (and I love the way Nathan has drawn her, with the over the top Barbara Cartland-type make-up trowled onto her face).

As with many of the NDN series its a perfectly formed little short story comic that captures a segment of life most readers can empathise with. If you haven’t been reading the series so far, its an ongoing project overseen by Dean Haspiel with stories from a diverse range of writers and artists (Kevin Colden, Nick Bertozzi, Harvey Pekar, Rick Veitch, Josh Neufeld and more) some funny, some sad, some nostalgic (sometimes all of these in the same story), all free to read on Smithmag and highly recommended.
