Nicholas Cage in the running for the Razzies

The annual awards list that few celebs in Tinsel Town want to be on has just released this year’s nominees – yes, it’s Golden Raspberry Awards time! The Razzies are the antidote to Hollywood’s annual back-slapping fest of self congratulation during the awards season which takes in the Golden Globes and, of course, the Oscars. While the latter gives out statues for best actor, director, film and most photographed cleavage in a plunging neckline designer dress the Razzies are a bit different as they highlight the worst of the movie industry’s output. Science fiction and comics-based movies have, I’m afraid to say, provided some pretty easy targets for the Razzies in the past, with movies like Bloodrayne and the ill-advised remake of the Wicker Man garnering a lot of nominations in previous years.

This year sees two comic-based blockbusters in the running for the less-than-coveted Golden Raspberry – Nicholas Cage is nominated in the worst actor category for Ghost Rider (which is a little unfair, because Nick doesn’t really ‘act’ in anything, he is the same in ever film) and Jessica Alba is nominated in the worst actress category for Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. It remains to be seen if either Cage or Alba will actually have the gumption to turn up to receive their awards (should they win) as Halle Berry did when Catwoman won a couple of years back (where in a nice reversal of the typical Oscar acceptance speech – “I’d like to thank my producer, my family, Jesus…” – she took the podium and thanked the producers for “putting me in a God-awful movie”). While there is some concern over whether the Oscars will take place due to the writer’s strike or be curtailed like the recent Golden Globes, the people behind the Razzies – scheduled to be announced on Saturday 23rd February, the day before Oscar should take place – have confidently proclaimed their show will go ahead as usual, secure in the knowledge that since most actors and directors don’t turn up they won’t have anyone who can’t cross the picket line. As usual we wish the best of luck to all nominees.
