Continuing to whet your appetite for this Saturday’s No Barcodes mini comic-con organised by the London Underground Comics crew we have British small press star and staunch supporter of the Camden market mob David Baillie chatting to another participant, one of the Bright Young Things of the Brit small press scene, Josceline Fenton, who has had her work featured in The Girly Comic as well as her own Circle and elsewhere.
DB: Hi, Josceline, hope you’re well! We’ve met a couple of times before and I adore your stuff and can’t wait to see your new major work, Circle, but how would you introduce yourself and your work to someone at No Barcodes next Saturday in Camden Lock Market who has never heard of you before?
JF: Hi! Since Oli has put me on the “noobs” table, I guess I’d introduce myself as a bit of a noob to the small press world. I’m shy and quiet and I prefer lowercase to capital letters. I started out drawing manga when I was 10, but I think I’ve developed my own style by now. Recently I like to make my comics a bit cut-and-paste; for example, in Circle, all the sound effects are made up of letters cut from magazines.

DB: I’ve seen you shivering behind the Camden Comics stall – how was that part for you? Y’know apart from the temperatures!
JF: A lot of fun! Except for when I burnt my tongue on hot chocolate. Everything tasted funny for days afterwards. In seriousness though, it’s lovely to be around other comic creators and to feel like you’re a part of it all. There’s something very satisfying about seeing all the comics laid out in front of you on the tables.
DB: What are you looking forward to most next Saturday?
JF: Meeting new people and hunting for new comics.

DB: Anything you’re dreading?
JF: Nothing that I’m “dreading”, really, but I hope the weather isn’t too hot. Comic creators melt easily. Also, forgetting names.
DB: And finally – any message for the people out there, reading this, wishing that they too were a young, cool and sexy comics creator?
JF: Join us in world domination! Or, more realistically, join us on Saturday.
DB: Thank you very much, Josceline Fenton!
JF: Thank you for interviewing me!
No Bar Codes is a one day indie comics event taking place at Camden Lock Market this Saturday; click here for more info.
Josceline can be found at her website where you can browse plenty of examples of her work and at No Barcodes next week. She’s looking for both commissions and Facebook fans, and I think you’d be smart to take her up on the offer.
David Baillie’s website, complete with the excellent Bellybutton Chronicles strip, can be found here, and the awesome new hardback edition of his fantasy adventure Tongue of the Dead debuts at No Bar Codes – click here for an exclusive discount voucher redeemable on the day. More of David’s No Barcodes interviews are also appearing on other British comics sites – so far Down The Tubes is hosting chats David had with Sean Azzopardi and Oliver Lambden while Overspill features a Q&A with Paul B Rainey; you can read another No Barcodes interview by David with Eagle award-winning Tom Humberstone here on the FPI blog.
