Comics and cartoons

Josh Neufeld reports some great news – his comic A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge will be collected and published by Pantheon in hardback in August 2009. A.D. has appeared online in SmithMag, a very worthy successor to their previously hosted webcomic Shooting War, which also received great critical response and went on to enjoy a hardback print edition. Moral from this story – the folks at SmithMag obviously know how to pick some bloody good, mature-subject comics and creators and we should keep an eye on any new strips they decide to host.

It seems somehow appropriate the news of the collected A.D. should come so soon after presidential hopeful McCain had to disown one of his religious backers, the Reverend John Hagee, who, among other despicable outbursts, claimed that Hurricane Katrina was sent by god to punish New Orleans for planning to host a Gay Pride parade. I prefer Josh’s work on the subject of Katrina and New Orleans and look forward to seeing it in printed form (as with Shooting War the print version will be expanded on the webstrip version, with new material – Josh also hopes to donate some of the proceeds to ongoing relief efforts in the city); meantime if you missed it you can check it out on SmithMag (and you should).

Thanks for the kind words on SMITH comix Joe! We’re real proud of the first two becoming books, and hope the same for our THIRD baby born recently! Yes the newest SMITH webcomic, running concurrently with A.D. is Next-Door Neighbor, edited by Dean Haspiel: http://www.smithmag.net/nextdoorneighbor/

Its an anthology of truelife next-door neighbor stories by an all star cast, twice a month, a new story by different creators. The first story was by Jonathan Ames & Nick Bertozzi, and in July, look forward to a very special first-time team-up… Harvey Pekar & Rick Veitch!
As always Joe, thanks for your support and badass blogginz!
