Film, TV and radio

Payvand’s Iran News features a triple-header interview with not one, not two, but three actresses – Chiara Mastroianni, who voices the teenage and adult Marjane Satrapi in the animated film adaptation of Persepolis, her mother the French cinema goddess Catherine Deneuve (who plays Marjane’s mother) and Danielle Darrieux who plays Marjane’s grandmother. Chiara, it turns out, actually approached Marjane directly to see if she could play a role in the movie: “I had read all four Persepolis novels and loved them. The combination of design, humor, hindsight and self-mockery, with no trace of self-indulgence or victimization was irresistible. I’d been thinking about doing a voice in an animated feature for quite some time, so when my mother mentioned Persepolis to me, I called Marjane and asked to do a voice test.”
