Spectrum awards announced

The fifteenth annual Spectrum Awards for fantastic art have been announced. The jury members this year included Daren Bader [artist/art director for Rockstar Games/San Diego], Tim Bodendistel [art director/Hallmark Cards], Frank Cho [artist], Kelley Seda [artist]. and Justin Sweet [artist]. Among the winners I notice that James Jean continues to conquer the known universe (and rightly so) with his brilliant cover work for Bill Willingham’s Fables series for DC garnering him another gong as he picked up the Gold Award in the comics category for Fables issue #66.

Not content with this James also won the Best In Show award (a special award to mark the 15th anniversary of Spectrum) for the cover to Fables #67; truly we must now all bow before James, the new King of Comics Covers! Seriously though that’s quite an achievement on top of the numerous other awards he’s been nominated for in the last couple of years, so big congrats to James. Adam Hughes took the Silver award in the same category for the cover artwork to Catwoman #75, so DC must be feeling pretty pleased this week. All of the winners (see the site for full details) will as usual be included in the next volume of the very fine Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art, which will be published in October (volume 14 is available now).

From the official release: “Spectrum: The Best In Contemporary Fantastic Art is acknowledged as the premiere showcase for imaginative illustration, sculpture, and Fine Art. Founded in 1993 by Cathy and Arnie Fenner, the Spectrum annuals are an international who’s-who of the best and brightest artists working today in all media. A retrospective show of selected art that appeared in the first eleven volumes of the series was held at the Museum of American Illustration in New York City in 2005. A second exhibition is planned for 2009.”
