(cartoonist Simone Lia’s contribution to Stars on Canvas)
A large number of people have donated artwork to the Willow Foundation to raise funds for the charity, which helps arrange special days out for seriously ill 16 to 40 year olds, to give them some respite and joy in the face of ongoing illness (the charity was established by Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson and his wife in memory of their daughter Anna who passed away from cancer aged only 31). The contributors for Stars on Canvas come from the worlds of TV, film, music, sports and cartooning – offerings range from those by pop group All Saints and Hollywood star Matt Damon to former Doctor Who Peter Davison (although they have misspelled his name), former Who companion Catherine Tate, Carol Cleveland of Monty Python fame, as well as several cartoonists, including Neil Bennett (a regular in Private Eye), Martin Rowson, Simone Lia and Dangermouse creator Steve Simpson. Dennis the Menace also makes an appearance, although it doesn’t say who the artist was for that one.

As you might expect from such a range of people the style and proficiency varies – some are light-hearted, amateur doodles, others quite accomplished works (the latter category not being exclusive to those who make a living creating art). The Stars on Canvas auction runs online until December 6th; the SW1 Gallery in London will be hosting an exhibition of the small canvases from December 2nd to 6th.
