Babylon 5 creator turned top comics scribe J. Michael Straczynski is set to script a new version of the 50s classic science fiction movie Forbidden Planet. As we’re all more than aware Hollywood seems to have an endless appetite for remaking older films and generally speaking I’m not enamoured with this at all, especially when they fiddle with an established classic (I dread the day I read about them remaking Casablanca, although technically the awful Barb Wire movie reworks the main plot of Casablanca, so in a sense its happened already). And a remake of FP, inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest, has been kicking around from studio to studio and producer to producer for years now (David Twohy and James Cameron have both been attached at some point), which isn’t usually an encouraging sign. But I’m prepared to suspend my cynicism a little here, not just because we share the name of the original movie (although obviously that adds an extra appeal for us) but because they have Straczynski on board. (Robby the Robot and the delicious Anne Francis in a publicity still for the original Forbidden Planet; I’m pleased to see from her official site that Ms Francis has come through treatment for cancer and is recovering)
