Thanks for the comments everyone. Yeah, Crowbar, I’d forgotten about that scene in 24. Much of my inspiration for Super Sam comes, not from comics at all, but from recent developments in US TV. My favorite shows happen to be 24, The Wire, Lost, and John From Cincinnati. All shows, especially Lost, which have, big themes and ideas, convoluted, fractured storytelling, and which I watch for the sheer joy of never knowing what’s going to happen next.

In the previous Season of 24 a nuclear bomb went off in LA. When everyone (including me) thought Jack would save the day as usual. I love unexpected plot-lines. Bring it on Darryl!

Allison, you’re right in that there does seem to be a bit of movement towards either more realism or in the case of fantastical superheroes at least more inclusion of using events from the real world (such as the laws restricting personal freedoms supposedly to protect us against terrorists) in works like Civil War. Although arguably you could say that Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons put a lot of realism into a science fiction tale of the Watchmen, basically looking at what it would be like if there really were superheroes, how society would react to them and what they in turn would be like as people. Which is all good as far as I’m concerned.

Something is happening lately to the world of super heroes it starts to break the rules in stories such as kick ass that is more realistic than what we used to see and here. Maybe we are ready for some change in the magical world of the super heores
