2008 is already shaping up to be a good year for fans (of which I am one) of Oliver Lambden and Laurence Powell’s excellent Tales From the Flat. We’ve got the brand-new seventh issue to enjoy, which the guys tell me kicks off the start of a new three-part story which will explore Fred’s origins as well as featuring “Ninjas, sexy Russian neighbours and saucy Spider-Man on Spider-Man action.” And as a bonus the Modern Monstrosity gang have also included the first in a new series of six-page backup stories which will feature contributions from some of the best of their fellows in the Brit small press scene. This issue sees Mallory ‘Fallen Angel‘ Chan’s contribution, Thesis.
The earlier issues are now hard to get hold of but that isn’t a huge problem because a little while back we had Tales From the Flat Collected Edition Volume 1, which, I am delighted to say, has now been joined by a second volume which collects issues four to six of the Eagle-nominated series and, like the first volume, it comes in at an incredibly reasonable £4.50. Yep, you read right, a mere £4.50 – a small price to explore some of the best the British small press scene has to offer and highly recommended. Its quite good to see these collected volumes from the self-published scene – I’m hoping that these formats may prove more attractive (not to mention visible) to potential readers. We know some of our readers have been picking up on some of the great variety of comics to be found in the UK small press scene but there are others who aren’t too sure about it or perhaps they don’t pick up individual issues – affordable collections like this offer a perfect way to try out a decent-sized chunk of new material for little cost, plus you know when you do you are also supporting some of our homegrown talent. You can read a re view of some of the earlier work and an interview with the TFTF guys Richard Bruton posted here on the blog.
