Film, TV and radio

Pop musician and David Tennant look-a-like Jarvis Cocker will be presenting a programme on BBC Radio 4 tomorrow at 11.30am entitled Zine Scene. From the BBC description:

Jarvis Cocker explores the history of fanzines, small publications designed and produced by devotees of popular phenomena. With the help of fanzine makers, collectors and experts, including Roger Sabin, Teal Triggs, Jon Savage and John Robb, Jarvis discovers the origin of fanzines in science fiction, long before the explosion of home-made fanzines during the punk rock days of the late 1970s.”

Like most science fiction fans I will always have a soft spot for fanzines – they were the backbone of the fan community in the pre-digital era and still influence many SF&F, comics and music websites and blogs today (and I’m betting some of them helped shape and influence the folks who now write pro magazines like SFX) – and indeed there’s still a vibrant print ‘zine scene going on too. Thanks to Matthew Badham for the link.
