The Museum der Weltkulturen (Museum of World Cultures) in Frankfurt is hosting an exhibition of Turkish cartoons in co-operation with the famous Frankfurt Book Fair. Die Nase des Sultans – the Sultan’s Nose- opened on the 9th and runs until November 15th, with work from Tan Oral and Turhan Selçuk, as well as works from the Turkish comics LeMan, Penguen and Uykusuz. As well as looking at how Turkish cartoons have evolved since the 19th century the exhibition is also intended to help dispel the myth held by many Westerners after the Danish Muhhamed cartoons troubles that Muslims don’t have a sense of humour. Since many of the cartoons I’ve seen from Turkey and the Middle East prove that Muslim cartoonist are just as aware of the use of humour, irony and satire as their Western counterparts I’d hope that it succeeds in that aim.
