The BBC reports that last summer’s Transformers movie scooped the Best Film gong at the MTV Movie Awards in California (director Michael Bay said filming on the sequel begins this week), while Johnny Depp and his astonishing cheekbones picked up two awards – Best Comedic Performance for his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the third Pirate of the Caribbean movie (“I’m not a very funny person” he argued in his acceptance speech) and Best Villain for his titular role in Tim Burton’s delightfully OTT musical version of Sweeney Todd. In other fantastic genre wins Will Smith picked up the Best Male Performance award for his role in the adaptation of I Am Legend and Iron Man won a new category – Best Summer Movie So Far (“Whatever that means”, joked one of the hosts and I suspect he said what we’re all thinking there. Great superhero movie but what the smeg does that award title mean? If something better comes out this summer do they have to give it back?).

Hmmm, okay, I know this is the MTV Movie Awards, not the most highbrow of cinematic gatherings, but seriously, Transformers the best movie for the last year? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a total snob and don’t have anything against a populist blockbuster winning, I enjoy them myself, but I do wonder that this was what some folks thought was the best movie they saw in the year. Then again perhaps its a better reflection of tastes than giving the award to a black and white Ukranian Indy movie of one man’s struggle to open a donut kiosk while working as an illegal immigrant in Paris…
