You might have thought it unlikely that any of you would have been rushing out to buy a book authored by ex-Spice Girl Geri Halliwell (I dunno, Madonna’s children’s books have been a big success – Joe) but the first of her series of children’s books ‘Ugenia Lavender‘, published this week, might have you thinking again. The children’s book is illustrated throughout by FPI fave and extremely talented illustrator, comics artist and more (can we say Renaissance man? Or perhaps Postmodern Multimedia Renaissance man. There is even a book of his photos available via Lulu’s print on demand services) Rian Hughes.

Many of you will know Rian has designed many of the comics logos in use today as well as being heavily involved in many other aspects of commercial design and a period as one of the countries top comics talents producing ‘Dare’ with Grant Morrison as well as fondly remembered stints on comics such as 2000AD with strips such as “Really and Truly” (check here for a massive interview – and lots of art – Rian kindly took the time to give us). If you have loved Rian’s work then these look well worth checking out. Rian promises some new comics work soon.

Rian’s latest work in comics seems to be the great logo to Paul Cornell’s new CAPTAIN BRITAIN AND MI:13 series for Marvel. It’s wonderfully evocative of old British comics and TV series.
But Geri bleedin’ Halliwell? Nein danke.

Can I just say that I shook Rian Hughes hand at The DFC launch party last night. Twice! Once when we were introduced, and then again when I realised which ‘Rian’ he was! And I’m not easily star-struck…
