“I write it out in a verse -
MacDonagh and MacBride
And Connolly and Pearse
Now and in time to be,
Wherever green is worn,
Are changed, changed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born. ” (W.B. Yeats, Easter 1916)
Pádraig tells me that Blood Upon the Rose, the first ever Irish graphic novel about the 1916 Easter Rising, a milestone on the road to Irish independence, is due to be published by O’Brien Press (their first graphic novel). Its being written and illustrated by Gerry Hunt, who regular readers will remember for his very well received Streets of Dublin and In Dublin City, with Bren B providing the colouring. The centenary of this event is just a few years away now, hopefully Gerry’s work will help get a lot more folks, especially in Ireland, learning about their history – and perhaps it will also interest some readers who don’t normally dabble in comics to have a look at the medium too. Irish illustration blog Scamp has more information and some preview images to enjoy.

I’m really looking forward to this. As Gerry Hunt is a retired architect, it also means that the GPO on O’Connell Street, the main focus of the action, will be well drawn!
