A rare ‘un-restored’ copy of the classic Action Comics #1 with that incredibly iconic image of Siegel and Shuster’s Superman making his debut to the world is going up for auction later today at Comics Connect. The owner bought it as a boy some twelve years after it was published (way back in 1938) when his dad gave him the princely sum of 35 cents to purchase it in a second hand bookstore. He had apparently forgotten about it until the mid 60s as it lay in his mother’s basement; since re-discovering it he decided to keep it aside to see if it in increased in value. Its thought it could go for $400, 000. Which may not be in the same league as the multi-million pound sale of art from the incredible collection of the late style god Yves Saint Laurent in Paris this week in Le Grand Palais (a work by Matisse went for 32 million Euros alone), but its still pretty remarkable, not to mention a damned good return on a 35 cent investment… (link via BoingBoing)
