Alec: The Years Have Pants by Eddie Campbell will be required reading this Christmas for many of us. It will sit beautifully on our shelves, looking spiffy and gorgeous thanks to the design work of Eric Skillman, who’s good enough to share the entire design process over on his blog, from getting a first speculative email from Top Shelf’s Brett Warnock to getting his copy in his hands. The very first designs he talks about in his original pitch are pretty much exactly what has ended up as final cover versions.
I rather like the second set of covers Skillman designed with it’s expanse of white space on the hardback and the faded out comic page on the softback, even though I can see why they wouldn’t really work as effective covers, and even though Skillman notes that he “can’t believe I even sent these, in retrospect. Glad to have dodged that bullet!“:
