An animator’s Oscar diary

Ahead of this Sunday’s Oscars ceremony the BBC site has been recording the thoughts of two nervous British nominees as they fly out to the US, do the press thing, meet other industry figures (and even get to hang out with Mike Judge, creator of Beavis and Butthead, who was one of the first to encourage and fund them) as well as being instructed how to act at the actual Academy Awards, what’s expected of them should they win. The nominees in question  are Adam Foulkes and Alan Smith of London-based animation studio Nexus; you may recall recently I mentioned them on the blog as they were Britain’s nominees for this year’s Short Animation Oscar for their fine dark comedy This Way Up (which I thoroughly enjoyed – a wordless tale of a father and son undertaker team trying against the increasing odds to bury an elderly lady; its got a nice Edward Gorey/Tim Burton Gothic humour vein running through it) and they’ve been recording their week leading up to actually being at one of the most famous awards ceremonies on the planet, which has to be pretty overwhelming. Best of luck to them and all other nominees for Sunday; you can watch the whole of This Way Up on the BBC’s Film Network site.
