Books, Interviews

Boing Boing in conjunction with the fine indy science fiction publisher Tachyon Publications is offering their readers the chance to put questions to one of the most respected (and brilliant and influential) SF&F writers of all time, Michael Moorcock. Leave your questions on the comments page at BB here and the BB team will pick out the best questions to put to the mighty Moorcock. As an added incentive there’s a chance for three readers to win the brand new Best of Michael Moorcock which has just been published by Tachyon (which contains a great selection of MM tales, from the classic Behold the Man – in which a time traveller goes back to the Holy Land seeking the real historic Jesus – to a previously unpublished short tale); I’ve got a copy sitting on my shelf right now and as soon as I polish off the 3 or 4 other books I’m in the middle of I’m looking forward to delving back into the wondrous realms of Moorcock, its been too long since I last did so and my fantasy passport needs to be re-stamped with its multiverse entry visa again.

If you haven’t checked out Tachyon yet I heartily recommend you do – their posthumously published Wall of America collection by Thomas Disch was one of my favourite books of last year and their Peter S Beagle collection, We Never Talk About My Brother, is simply one of the most beautiful, elegant books (in any genre) which I’ve read this year and which I became absolutely lost in. Peter is one of those incredibly writers that many other writers will tell you is one of their favourite authors and yet he’s probably (like Disch, come to think of it) one which a lot of SF&F readers may not have actually read, although they will have heard his name. If you’ve never had the pleasure of entering the beautifully crafted books of Mr Beagle then its a perfect introduction. As with comics its often worthwhile treading a little off the beaten path to the independent publishers to find treasures like this gleaming in the dark woods. Try it, go on, you’ll thank me later.
