The BAFTAs for the video gaming industry were held last night, with Call of Duty 4 scoring three awards (Gameplay, Story and People’s Choice) but in a surprise win was beaten to the coveted Game of the Year gong by Super Mario Galaxy. In another surprise GTA IV went home empty handed despite numerous nominations; Dead Space picked up two awards, Best Use of Audio and Best Score (showing how close to the film industry the game industry now is). An award was given to Steven Spielberg for work on the Nintendo Wii game Boom Blox while a special award of a Fellowship was given to Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari, for bringing video games to the masses; those of us of a certain age will sigh nostalgically while our hands cramp reflexively recalling the ungodly, ungainly joystick controllers of the original Atari game system.
