Comics and cartoons, General

Bloghorn, the blog for the Professional Cartoonist’s Association, has moved, so adjust your bookmarks and links.

And via the newly relocated Bloghorn I see that preparations are in hand for this year’s Shrewsbury CartoonFestival, which will have a theme of The Science of Nature, which will also fit rather neatly with the town’s celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of local lad Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species, a truly revolutionary book that still causes furious debate event today in some circles (or in some extreme cases not even debate, just rants and calls for it to be banned from schools). The University of Kent and others are loaning some historic science cartoon art from the 19th century for an exhibition; also featured will be work from Czech cartoonist Miroslav Bartak and Blighty’s own Steve Bell. All of which reminds me of this famous cartoon (below) of Darwin with one of our nearest relatives; annoyingly I’m not sure who the artist was (does anyone know?) but I think I am right in saying it was meant to satirise Darwin’s views on the evolution of humans at the time.

    Hi Joe,
I’m pretty sure that’s by a French artist called Faustin Betbeder (known as “Faustin”), for the London Sketch-book.
Thanks for the info about the Shrewsbury festival. Another Darwin tie-in you might be interested in: Eugene Byrne and I have created a 100-page comic book biography of Darwin which comes out at the end of this month. It’s in the same format as our life of IK Brunel from a few years ago, and as with everything written by Eugene, is very funny as well as informative.
    cheers,
    Simon
