Awards, Books, Comics and cartoons

The British Fantasy Society has the shortlist up for this year’s awards (voting ends August 1st, the ceremony is at the Fantasycon in September). Contending for the Best Novel (the prestigious August Derleth Fantasy Award) are Neil Gaiman with the Graveyard Book, Christopher Fowler for The Victoria Vanishes, Ramsey Campbell for Thieving Fear, Gary McMahon for Rain Dogs, Simon Clark for Midnight Man and ‘William Heaney’ (a pen-name for Graham Joyce) for Memoirs of a Master Forger. There are numerous other gongs up for grabs, including Best Novella, Best Short Story, Best Collection (Joe Hill, Tim Lebbon, Stephen King and others all appearing in these).

And there’s also, I’m pleased to say, a Best Comic – Graphic Novel award, which boasts a pretty broad and diverse range of nominees, with 30 Days of Night: Beyond Barrow, All Star Superman, Comic Book Tattoo, New Avengers: Illuminati, Hellblazer: Fear Machine, Hellblazer: the Laughing Magician, Locke and Key, Buffy Season 8 Volume 3: Wolves at the Door and, I’m delighted to see, waving the flag for the British independent creators, Factor Fiction’s The Girly Comic Volume 1 (reviewed here). Check the BFS site for the full list of categories and nominees.
