The excellent Dr Bryan Talbot will be interviewed this coming Monday on BBC Radio Scotland’s Radio Café to discuss his new graphic novel Grandville, which I am just re-reading right now and have to say is fabulous: alternate history science fiction, anthropomorphic characters, some wonderful Steampunk elements, references to other books, comics and contemporary events and, as you would doubtless expect, gorgeous artwork. Last weekend BBC Radio 4′s Saturday Review was less kind to Grandville (and to Ian Rankin’s Dark Entries), although they spent precious little time talking about the actual books as they were too busy being sniffy about the comics genre (which the reviewers admitted to not being overly familiar with, not that this stopped them making ignorant observations about the entire medium); having been on Radio Café a few times myself I think this will be a rather better outing since the folks there seem genuinely interested in discussing and highlighting good works of art; as usual with the BBC programmes the show should be available for a week after transmission on the Listen Again feature.
