Cinebook, who have been publishing a good range of French and Belgian BD albums for the English-language market for both kids and adults, have announced they will start publishing eight new series from the Continent in 2009, with Billy and Buddy, Buck Danny, The Chimpanzee Complex, Insiders, The Bellybuttons, Orbital, Pandora’s Box and Spirou & Fantasio all due to see their first volumes coming out through this year and joining their existing range, which includes Lucky Luke, Iznogoud, Thorgal and Largo Winch, which is good news. As we reported last week, Cinebook will be on the road, with a stand at the London branch of the Institut Français as part of their youth festival from the 5th of February to the 7th (with Yakari creators Derib and Job making an appearance there on the 7th) and at the upcoming Hi-Ex comics convention in Inverness over the Valetine’s weekend (check their site for more details of those and other events).

Jolly good show, but I think any one of us can think of about a dozen BD series that are crying out for decent anglophone reprints alongside this stuff. Who’s up for the job?

You’re not wrong, Mark – there are some series which are big bestsellers in Europe which most of us here never see. Mind you, this isn’t confined to the comics market, the mainstream books publishing is the same. For every Arturo Perez Reverte or Jostein Gaarder who crosses over successfully into English translation there are huge selling books which sell in French, German, Spanish and Italian but for some reason don’t make it into English…
