Here in the UK its Comic Relief Day. I should point out for the benefit of readers outside the UK that it doesn’t involve the sort of comics we normally like talking about here, its the comedy variety of comic. But while there are plenty of things about the UK I’d like to see changed there is something tremendously uplifting in living in a country where everyday citizens will sport large red clown noses in public in large numbers and do silly things and have a laugh to raise money for worthwhile causes. It tickles my sense of the absurd and the wonderfully ridiculous (a sense doubtless shaped by a parade of weekly British kid’s comics as a boy). And, as is often the case with these large, national charity marathons, a wide variety of people are taking part; on this evening’s broadcast on the BBC that will include a special themed episode of the Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures. Doctor Who himself, David ’sexy hair’ Tennant will co-host the evening with Davina McCall; the two of them will apparently compete at some point during the night on a special celeb version of Mastermind. Surely a centuries old Time Lord should be able to handle that?

(the delightful Liz Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith – still my favourite Doctor Who companion – gets into the Red Nose Day spirit)
