Crow remake? No, no, no, leave it alone…

I’m surprised and dismayed to find out that Stephen Norrington (the lamentable League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie) wants to remake Alex Proyas cult Goth film The Crow. The obvious question is why? Comics to film adaptations have a chequered history as regards quality, but as someone who loved James O’Barr’s original comics I thought Proyas’ film version, while straying a bit from the comic, was thematically true to the source and its still one I like to re-watch from time to time, its held up well, although it will always carry a tragic taint from the on-set death of star Brandon Lee.

If it was a film made four or five decades ago I could see the interest in remaking it, but why such a recent film? Wasn’t it bad enough trying to re-do Halloween recently? Aren’t there other stories out there to be told without endlessly recycling fairly recent flicks (and usually with inferior productions)? Talking on JoBlo Proyas, who is working on Dracula: Year Zero (a prequel of sorts to Stoker’s tale) didn’t seem to impressed either:

I think it’s kind of premature, really,” says Proyas. “It’s seems like THE CROW is only like 15 years old maybe. It’s seems, early. (laughs) I always thought that remakes, you shouldn’t be given license to remake something for at least 25 years. I don’t know. It just seems kind of odd to me. Just re-release the original movie. ”

Maybe Proyas should do his director’s cut of the first one, which I found to be a mess. The new one doesn’t exactly interest me, but who knows, maybe they’ll cast someone good… like Eddie Furlong. Oh, wait…

The reason they’re remaking this is the same reason they tend to remake everything. Hollywood simply can’t imagine. Am ticked that they’re remaking V The Mini Series.
