Conventions and events, News

The financial situation continues to force folks to cut back: Cymru Con 2009, the first Welsh Convention for many, many years has been cancelled for 2009. It is hoped that it will be able to return in 2010.

The website placeholder reads:

It is with much regret that I have to inform you that the Head of our organising committee has been forced to cancel the Cymru Con on the 8th August 2009.
I would like to thank you so much for your interest in our event and I am so sorry to have to cancel the Con. Our main sponsor has had to withdraw their financial backing, and with the current economic climate this has simply made it impossible to be able to put on a large event such as Cymru Con as we have been unable to secure further financial backing.

Unfortunate indeed. Current convention standings are:

Hi-Ex – February, Inverness (hopefully on next year, no news yet – Update via comments – definitely on next year.)

UK Web & Mini Comix Thing – 28th & 29th March, London (yep, you missed it – looked good though)

London Zine Symposium – 3rd May, London (duh!)

Bristol International Comic Expo – 9th & 10th May, Bristol.

2D Comics Festival – 4th-6th June, Derry/Londonderry (hat-tip)

London Underground Comics 176 – 27th June, London

Caption – 15th & 16th August, Oxford.

British International Comics Show (BICS) – 3rd & 4th October, Birmingham.

Thought Bubble – 21st November, Leeds.

(That’s just very quickly and off the top of my head – let me know in the comments if there’s any more).

There will indeed be another HiEx next year!

We are at the moment thrashing out the final final dates with the venue, and will announce it as soon as we can!

theres also the the 2D festival in Derry thats on in june, its grown in massive leaps and bounds and going into its 3rd year this year bigger then ever and there might be one if not two comic events in the south to be added to that list in a couple of months, so its not all doom and gloom.

also forgot to add the london zine symposium at the start of may -http://londonzinesymposium.lasthours.org.uk/ – they were handing out lots of flyers at the recent thing con and really pushing for comic people to get involved.

Eastercon, the British National SF Convention, in Bradford from 10 to 13 April – yes, just over a week from now – including me doing my soon-to-be-legendary Alan Moore Show’n'Tell…
