After the sudden, shocking loss of David Gemmell a group of fans and fellow fantasy writers decided to honour his memory with a new literary award for the finest fantasy writing, Legend, and to make it open to the fans to decide (highly appropriate, I think, any book signing event I ever did with David would always over-run as he took the time to chat to all the readers, they were always a pleasure to host and ended with many happy readers, so he’d be pleased to know those readers are getting a say in the award). Well, the voting has been going on and now Debbie Miller tells me that they have now whittled down the original list to a final shortlist of nominees: Joe Abercrombie for Last Argument of Kings, Juliet Marillier for Heir to Sevenwaters, Brandon Sanderson for The Hero of Ages, Andrzej Sapkowski for Blood of Elves and Brent Weeks for The Way of Shadows. The vote is open to all (you don’t need to register to vote, although ISPs will be logged to avoid double-voting) and you have until the end of May to register your choice, so please, SF&F fans, lend your support to a very appropriate way to remember one of our best writers and simultaneously promote new writing, please do cast you vote.
