Radio 4 have a new Doctor Who documentary airing on Tuesday looking at the classic Target Book Doctor Who novels. Like Joe said a couple of years ago on the blog, the Target books were a big part of every young sci-fi fan’s life. You young people nowadays don’t know you’re born with your Interweb, multiple channels, DVDs, video on demand and all the rest. When we were young we had to actually watch the episodes of Doctor Who when they were on the tele and if we wanted more those wonderful Target Books with their beautifully designed covers were all we had. Just like Joe, just the very sight of the covers sends a nostalgic thrill through me, instantly taking me back to the childhood excitement of seeing one I’d not read before. And it seems Mark Gatiss shares this nostalgic view as well. The BBC website tells us this:
“Mark Gatiss, Doctor Who writer and fanatic, explores the hugely popular Doctor Who novelisations of the 1970s and 80s, published by Target books. Featuring some of the best excerpts from the books and interviews with publishers, house writers, illustrators and the actors whose adventures the books tirelessly depicted.”
“On The Outside It Looked Like An Old Fashioned Police Box” is on Radio 4 on Tuesday 23rd June 11:30-12:00 and available on the BBC’s iPlayer for a week afterwards.
