I was a bit surprised to receive an email about the Eagle Awards today; normally we have voting for Britain’s main comics early in the year with the actual awards given out at the Bristol Comics Expo, but this year with the slimmed down Bristol show and lacking the main hall the awards event normally takes place in most of us were under the impression there simply wouldn’t be any Eagles this year. But Cassandra Conroy, who took over organising the Eagles from her father Mike, has sent out an announcement declaring that actually she’s determined that we are having the Eagles this year, just not in the usual manner at Bristol, but we are having them:
“‘The nominations process will begin Friday 8th May 2009 on our website. Just nominate your 2008 choice in each category and click return. Nominations close on Friday 22nd May 2009, and then we’ll take the top five nominations in each section and place them up for voting to begin Monday 1st June 2009.
The winners of the Eagle Awards might not have a stage to stand on or an opportunity to give a speech this year, but they will Eagle Award, whether in person or by other means. And the full list of Award Winners will be released to the world on Monday 15th June 2009. We might not have a meal this year, but we will have awards. We will have winners. And the best of the UK and US comic scene will still fight for the right to be showcased on one of the longest and most prestigious awards out there.”
I had a look this evening and the nominations weren’t online yet, so I think we’re going to need to check back and see if they come up. And dare I rather brazenly request if you’re so inclined to stick in a vote for the FP blog in the Favourite Comics Related Website once it is up an running?
EDIT 9/5/09 – The Nomination form is up and active now:

Sod that. Everyone nominating Bad Librarianship will get a cold, hard £5 note. Make it so!

Thanks for posting this. The “Roll of Honour” award usually goes to a contemporary artist, but I think we should be using it to honour the giants of the medium. To that end I’ve set up a Facebook campaign to Nominate Dudley D. Watkins, creator of Desperate Dan and the Broons. Join up and spread the word!

Does anyone have news on the shortlist announcement that was scheduled for 1st June?
