Edgar Wright on Scott Pilgrim movie

Total Film has an interview with Edgar ‘Shaun of the Dead’, ‘Hot Fuzz’ Wright about his movie take on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim comics (co-incidentally just as the latest book, volume 5, arrives in the stores). Bryan’s Scott Pilgrim seems to have grown from small cult to being discussed all over the place and Wright (who strikes me as a great choice to do a good adaptation) creating a movie version is only going to increase that exposure. What I find particularly nice is that much of this growth in awareness has happened in the nicest way – word of mouth, not through some big promotional campaign (which would be too expensive for an Indy press like Oni even if they wanted to) and that, to me, is always the mark of work which is worth paying some attention to.

Here’s Wright talking about how he is approaching the film:

There have been lots of great comic-book adaptations recently, but I thought there was a good way – post Sin City and 300 – to bring an element of graphics and animation to the screen in a comedy film that you wouldn’t accept in something harder like The Dark Knight.

There’s also the videogame element that’s in the book. It seems to me you can do a good videogame film that isn’t an adaptation of any game. In the same way The Matrix was a great comic-book film that wasn’t actually based on any comic book, this will have elements of gaming without being a straight adaptation of a game.”
