A while back I reviewed Emma Vieceli and Andrew Ruddick’s Dragon Heir collection, a manga quest fantasy that I really warmed to. But I did point out that:
“I really think that the main problem with those initial episodes is that they were done many years ago, around 2000/2001 when Emma was still sickeningly young. And as such, they should have been no more than try-outs, first attempts at the story that she would develop when she was old enough and skilled enough to make it work properly. But sadly, she was a little too talented too young and went ahead and released these first issues.“
Well, Emma, bless her, wrote back to say she pretty much agreed and it was something she’d been thinking about recently as well. 18 months later and it seems she’s done far more than think about it. On her website she’s decided to completely rework the earliest parts of the story and says;
“Dragon Heir was my first comic project, started back when I joined Sweatdrop. It is ongoing and currently runs up to 9 issues in print, with a graphic novel collecting issues 1 – 6. However, the original pages had begun to show their age. I am currently working to smarten up and rework the first 5 issues to bring some cohesion to the series, and that’s what you’re seeing here. Dragon Heir: Reborn.“
The reworked Dragon Heir: Reborn webcomic is being serialised on Emma’s website and the original collection and subsequent comics are available from the Sweatdrop Studios site. She’s currently hard at work at the Comic Village at the MCM Expo this weekend and will be appearing at Leeds Thought Bubble event on 21 November.
