Top movie magazine Empire’s annual awards will be coming soon and they have now posted up the final shortlist of nominees who will be contending for the gongs this year; unlike the BAFTAs and Oscars and Cesars the Empire awards come from the votes of movie lovers who read the mag, so its usually interesting to compare what they liked best in the year against the industry’s own awards fests (although sometimes that can have the drawback of feeling like some folks voted for biggest movie rather than best, but that’s the way it goes). The full list of nominees (you have until March 12th to cast your vote) can be found on the Empire site, but its worth making a special mention of their (much appreciated) support for some of our favourite genres (which often get short changed by the movie industry awards). In the running in the fantastical genres:

The Orphanage, The Mist, Eden Lake, The Strangers and Sweeney Todd are all contending for the Best Horror award, Iron Man, Wanted, Hellboy 2: the Golden Army, the Dark Knight and Wall-E are all competing for the Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Superhero category. Quantum of Solace is in the running for Best Thriller, with Dan Craig and his smouldering blue eyes also in the Best Actor category, as is Batman’s Christian Bale, Iron Man’s Robert Downey Jr and Sweeney Todd’s Johnny Depp, plus Helena Bonham Carter (sweeney Todd) and Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) are in the running for the Best Actress gong (way to go the fantastic genres!).Wall-E, The Dark Knight and Iron Man are all also in the running for Best Film.
