You may recall a couple of weeks ago I mentioned this month’s Lost World Read, which will promote reading and celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as part of the Edinburgh literature campaign (which previously brought us the graphic novel adaptations of Stevenson’s Jekyll and Hyde and Kidnapped by Alan Grant and Cam Kennedy). You may also recall that Simon Gurr told us about another aspect of this year’s reading campaign, which goes far beyond Edinburgh, taking place in cities around the UK and incorporating another important anniversary, the 200th ‘birthday’ of Charles Darwin; as part of the Darwin 200 events and the reading campaign Simon and Eugene Byrne have created a graphical biography of Darwin, which is available absolutely free from a number of libraries in cities and areas like Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bristol, Westminster, Portsmouth, Hampshire and Shropshire. Its a perfect companion to the copies of the Lost World being given away and a damned good way to encourage reading (especially among younger readers) and give them a taste for the wonders of natural history, wildlife and the environment at the same time. Simon has thoughtfully posted up details of how to get free copies on his blog right here.

Now, as I don’t live in any of the aforementioned cities, perhaps a friend in, oh, to pick a city completely at random, Edinburgh, might be to pick one up for me and stick it in the mail??
