Uncle Eddie’s Theory Corner contrasts and compares two classic comics artists, Frank Frazetta and Wally Wood. Nothing overly unusual in that, you might think, its not unusual for people to compare the styles and techniques of artists working in the same medium and while interesting such comparisons are, as is the nature of most artistic discussion, down to individual tastes and interpretation. But in this case Eddie has an unusually accurate basis for the comparison – both artists were illustrating the same story, a horror tale called Came the Dawn.
The Wood pages (such as the lower image shown here) are fully inked and finished, the Frazetta work (the top image) is pencilled but not inked. The Wood art was created for a comic book format, the Frazetta for the later magazine format which was used as a way to get around the growing censorship on comics in America (won’t someone, please, think of the children!), but the magazine folded and the Frazetta work was left incomplete.
