When we lost jazz musician, presenter and cartoonist Humphrey Lyttelton last spring a question mark hung over the the long-running and well-loved radio show I’m Sorry, I Haven’t Got a Clue which he presented for decades. There was some discussion as to whether the show should finally be retired or continue with a new presenter; now the BBC has announced that it will actually share the hosting duties on Clue between three comedians and writers, the wonderfully hang-dog Jack Dee, the multi-voiced Rob Brydon and the national treasure that is Stephen Fry. Comedian and writer Barry Cryer, a Clue member for many years (and also, incidentally, a writer on famous British cartoonist Trog’s Flook strip at one point, just as Humph was), explained that the fans expressed their wishes that the show continue and that it wouldn’t be disrespectful to Hump to do so.
Yes, I realise that this news might be only tangentially related to comics and cartooning, but Clue is one of those brilliant radio comedy shows which helps make my weeks brighter and I’m pleased not only to know it will return (I’m sure Humph would approve) but that it will have these talented performers joining it. The new series begins recording in April and should begin airing on the BBC in June.
