Gerry talks to Ivan

Comics and cartoons, Interviews

Gerry Alanguilan has posted a video interview with French comics writer and artist Ivan Brun. For those of us who haven’t come across Brun before (which will be a fair chunk of the English language readers, I’d imagine), Kenny tells me he thinks he is a brilliant cartoonist and that his choice of subject matter should rank him alongside the likes of Joe Sacco. At the moment you’d have to order his graphic albums from a French bookstore and obviously need some grasp of the French language, although Kenny tells me that his most recent work, No Comment, is wordless, so there’s no language barrier in the way for that one.

There’s more about Ivan on Gerry’s Komikero blog – its the first I’ve come across his work, but I can feel my bookseller sense tingling in that very agreeable way that normally tells me I’d really like to read some of this. Isn’t it nice when you come across a book and creator you’d never heard of before and just know you want to read? Kudos to Gerry for bigging him up (and to Kenny for pointing it out). You can see a bit more of Ivan’s work (some pages from Lowlife) here on Le Monde’s site and publisher Tanabis has a page (with gallery and info) too. Here I sit in Scotland, reading about and watching a French comics creator who tackles global issues and it’s via a Filipino comics artist’s blog – man, I love the web…
