Among this week’s new releases there were two whose covers really grabbed me, one simple and largely monochromatic, the other also quite simple but with a splash of colour. One is volume 12 of Powers: 25 Coolest Dead Superheroes of All Time (finally in, I know a lot of readers have been waiting for that) and the other is the first volume of the recent Vertigo series Air: Letters From Lost Countries. Yes, I know, I know, we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but these two really did draw my eye to them (which is obviously part of what a graphic novel cover is meant to do); Powers is quite stark with the silhouettes and large title banner, almost like an old propaganda poster crossed with an old pulp Noir cover, Air obviously more colourful (literally), but both really nice, clean, clear, simple graphics, both make me want to look inside. Nice.
