Jon Courtenay Grimwood has announced that he has signed a three-book deal with top science fiction and fantasy publisher Orbit (home to writers like Marianne de Pierres, Kane MacLeod, Iain Banks, R Scott Bakker and many others). According to a quick post on Facebook the deal is for three “historical fantasies set in 15th century Venice.” My book buds are salivating at the thought – Jon is a quite brilliant writer with nice, sharp prose, clever ideas and usually incorporating an achingly cool sense of other cultures and lands into his tales (no doubt a product of his international upbringing). He’s also one of the SF writers I recommend often to people who are either not mad on the genre or who have been away from it for a while as works like the brilliant Pashazade (and its two sequels) work perfectly as taut, absorbing thrillers regardless of the SF elements. I can’t wait to see what he is doing with this new series.
