Comics and cartoons, New arrivals

Among this week’s new arrivals is the oft-delayed third volume of Harold Gray’s Complete Little Orphan Annie and I couldn’t resist sharing one of the cartoons from the back cover – this is nearly eight decades old, drawn as the world staggered through the effects of the Great Depression in the early 1930s; its fairly simple and old fashioned by today’s standards (that old trick of writing labels onto images to make sure people understood the intent) and yet its still remarkably effective, I think, and it still seems all too relevant to the present day:
