Hugh Hefner features in the new issue of Royal Flush magazine, talking not so much about the Playboy Bunnies but his love of comics and good cartooning. Apparently Hef not only talks about his support for good comics creators like Harvey Kurtzman and Jack Cole but how in his teens he started drawing himself in autobiographical comics strips (I never knew that about Hef). In a slightly more macabre vein Hef allowed Royal Flush to reproduce the suicide note that Plastic Man creator Jack Cole wrote him shortly before his death. Sounds interesting – these days most of us probably think of Hef purely in terms of Playboy titillation and its easy to forget the mag paid well for good cartooning work (with Hef even trying to bankroll an all colour comics mag, which sadly folded after just two issues).
