Hugos shortlist

The nominations for the 2009 Hugo awards for science fiction and fantasy are now up (BSFAs, the Arthur C Clarkes, now the Hugos, can’t be long till Eisners final list appears, surely?). Contending for Best Novel are Anathem by Neal Stephenson, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman (with illos by Dave McKean), Cory Doctorow’s Little Brother, Charles Stross’ Saturn’s Children and Zoe’s Tale by John Scalzi.

In the Best Graphic Story (a category I am very pleased to see as part of the highly respected Hugos) is The Dresden Files: Welcome to the Jungle by Jim Butcher and Adrian Syaf (Del Rey/Dabel), Girl Genius Volume 8 by Kaja and Phil Foglio, Fables: War and Pieces by Bill Willingham, Mark Buckingham, Steve Leialoha and Andrew Pepoy (DC/Vertigo), Schlock Mercenary: the Body Politic by Howard Tayler (Tayler Corporation, available as a free PDF), Serenity: Better Days by Joss Whedon, Brett Matthews and Will Conrad, Y: the Last Man Volume 10: Whys and Wherefores by Brian K Vaughan and Pia Guerra (DC/Vertigo). Spectrum 15: the Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art also gets a nod in the Best Related Books category.

The Dark Knight, Hellboy II: the Golden Army, Iron Man, Wall-E and METAtropolis are all competing for the Best Dramatic Presentation Long Form, while in the Short Form the episode The Constant from Lost, Doctor Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog (that man Whedon again!), Revelations from Battlestar Galactica are all nominated along with two episodes of Doctor Who: Turn Left (by Russell T Davies) and Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead (Steven Moffat). Daniel Dos Santos, Bob Eggleton, Donato Giancola, John Piccacio and Shaun Tan are all nominated for the Best Professional Artist award.
