Comics and cartoons

Our former cartoonist-in-virtual-residence Darryl Cunningham has posted up a very interesting five-page comics on his blog entitled It Could Be You, drawing (no pun intended) on his own experiences of working in a psychiatric ward. Its not only interesting, like comics such as the With The Light manga it uses the medium to make some good points about mental health in a clear, accessible way and highlight the way many people react (usually negatively) to those with mental health issues. As Darryl makes clear such sufferers aren’t ‘nutters’ to be made fun of or ridiculed for their lack of ‘normalness’ (whatever that is, never grasped that concept much myself), they are ill and deserve the same respect, sympathy and help as anyone with a physical ailment (and as he points out some mental problems do actually stem from physical causes). It Could Be You is part of a series on this theme that Darryl is posting (he already has Dementia Ward up, with some more to come), so you should bookmark and check his blog if you haven’t already (and if not, why not?)

I love the first two strips he’s posted! It’d be great to see a whole book of these, he really knows his subject well. I’d buy it in a flash.
