The Scottish media are reporting a rare sale of comics art by the immortal Dudley Watkins, appropriately enough at an auction house – Curr & Dewar – in Dundee, home city to the mighty DC Thomson publishing empire. Four pencil sketches – one of Oor Wullie, the Bairn from the Broons, Pa and Grandpa Broon – all dated from 1968 (just a year or so before Watkins passed away) are going under the hammer today and have apparently been drawing a lot of attention, which is understandable since DC Thomson don’t normally sell art from their vast comics archive and these kinds of private sketches by the original artists don’t come up for sale very often. “The drawings are wonderful and extremely rare. They have been entered for sale by a local couple. They belonged to the lady’s mother and have already attracted substantial interest,” Steve Dewar of auction house Curr & Dewar.
