Pixar big cheese John Lasseter is to be honoured at this year’s Venice Film Festival with a lifetime achievement award for his pioneering work in the field of computer animation. Quite deserved, in my opinion – some studios use computer animation simply because they can; Pixar push what they can do with it to make damned good animation, good characters and interesting stories, not just for show. Which is probably why they are so successful in terms of both box office and critical acclaim. Also rather nice to see a lifetime achievement award being given out before the recipient is extremely elderly for once (you worry when film awards do that to venereable old stars that it means they aren’t long for this world. Nice to see it given at an earlier stage of someone’s career). (via the BBC)
