Jon Haward gets animated

Top UK artist Jon Haward has been having a lot of fun with a recent commission – creating artwork for an animated TV commercial for Coca-Cola, which has as its theme a variety of characters all drawn (no pun intended) from different comics styles: “basically I drew enviroment stuff buildings, trees, bridge, giant snowman ,coke van, cars, characters black boy with ice cream ,Clark Kent spoof, hot manga guy, girl with the fan ,chap with the watering can ,the background crowd… the animators would draw the characters doing the action and then i would redrew them in black ink line which is called clean up so what you see looks like a comic strip cut out but moving.”

(some of Jon’s comics-themed art for the Coke ad; is it just me or is this a bit of a tribute to the famous Jack Kirby Fantastic Four cover?)

The ad was being created by London-based Nexus Productions, who you may remember had the honour of flying the flag for Britain in this year’s Short Animation category at the Oscars for the Burtonesque This Way Up; if you click on ‘directors’ on their site, then ‘tom and mark’ and pick out Coca-Cola from their list (sorry, there isn’t a direct link) you can view it in a small video window.
