Comics and cartoons

Regular readers might recall that just under a year ago one of our prominent Brit small press comics creators, David Baillie, was the featured artist in a European publication, BD Zine. BD Zine “is distributed freely in selected comic book shops in France, Luxembourg, Belgium and Netherlands. Each issue is solely dedicated to one artist so that he/she can have more visibility.” The not-for-profit French publication from I.M.A. is aimed purely at creating awareness of interesting comics artists from across Europe, obviously something we approve of very much. Even if it did lead to M’sieu Baillie wearing a beret rather too often.

Well, Josceline Fenton, who a lot of you will already know for her work with Circle (which was one of the titles Sean and Oli from LUC picked out in their Best of the Year recently) and The Girly Comic, saw that post about David and decided that she would try her luck; I’m delighted to say that the folks at I.M.A., like a number of readers here, were impressed with her not inconsiderable talent and BD Zine #21 features Josceline’s work, including a four-page comic she created especially for it, now being read across Europe (see the lovely cover art above). Well done, Josceline – we so often talk about fascinating artists working in the European scene and how we’d like to see more of it translated and made available here, but isn’t it terrific to see some of our own homegrown talent being showcased to our friends in the European scene too? And for those of you just coming to Josceline’s work, you can find out more on her Mild Tarantula website, while fellow BD Ziner David Baillie posted a quick interview with her here on the blog ahead of last year’s LUC No Barcodes event.
