The Hollywood Reporter has news of who will fill the lead roles for two recently announced upcoming productions for the Sci-Fi Channel (or whatever they are calling themselves now); the new Riverworld production, based on the late Philip Jose Farmer’s books, will feature Laura Vandervoort (Smallville’s Supergirl, pictured below), who will be the fiancee of Tahmoh (Battlestar Galactica’s Helo) Penikett’s war correspondent Matt Ellman; Scots actor Alan Cumming, no stranger to the fantastic genres, will also star as the Caretaker.

For their new TV version of the classic suphero comic The Phantom the channel has announced Ryan Carnes will play the titular role; Carnes is probably best known for his role on Desperate Housewives and a guest slot on the Doctor Who two-parter The Daleks Take Manhattan and Evolution of the Daleks. In a bit of a coup the fabulous Isabella Rossellini has been signed up to play scheming villian Lithia. Both have commenced shooting and should air next year as four hour tele-movies.
